With over 25 years’ experience as a safety professional and a real passion for working with people, Fernando founded Pacific Safety in 2008. His vision was to attract like-minded, high performing safety professionals who shared his passion and want to help reducing risk, eliminating harm, and increasing wellness in the workplace.

Fernando has been a long standing, active member of the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering and is a Certified Health and Safety Consultant since 2009. His professional career has been deeply rooted in British Columbia. He spent 15 years in the classroom teaching Occupational First Aid, Instructor Development Programs and WorkSafeBC Education Partner courses. He was the Director of Training with the Care Institute of Safety and Health Inc., and EMS Plus Safety Services Inc.  His experience as a professional adult facilitator was the foundation for his excellence in communication approach to advising today.

Mike Pearson CRSP

Senior Consultant / Consulting Services Manager

Mike Pearson is a Senior Consultant and Lead Integrator with Pacific Safety.  Born and raised in Vancouver, he is an OHS leader with over 20 years of experience. Mike is a Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) with the Board of Canadian Registered Safety Professionals (BCRSP).  Mike’s passion for protecting others from harm is born from his long career as a warehouse worker and his family history of volunteerism.

Mike achieved his diploma in Occupational Health and Safety from British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) in 2002.  He was recruited to work as a Safety Analyst for BCRTC (Skytrain) where he worked until 2007 after which he moved to work with WorkSafeBC as an Industry Specialist.  This role provided him with a leadership opportunity with industry leaders in Manufacturing to help launch the Manufacturing Safety Alliance of BC (formerly FIOSA-MIOSA).  After five years with Industry and Labour Services he moved back to BCRTC to help them develop a Contractor Safety Management Program for their Capital development program.  In 2014 Ballard Power Systems recruited Mike to be their Manager of Environment Health and Safety.

During his professional career Mike has been active with the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering (CSSE) as a board member and supported the BCIT OH&S Program Advisory Council.  Outside work he is active to say the least, completing 4 Ironman Triathlons.

Jeremy Ryan CRSP

Senior Safety Advisor - Team Lead

Jeremy is an ambitious safety professional with 6 years of health and safety experience, and over 10 years work experience in heavy industry. He has extensive experience in oil and gas, light rail, environmental and construction sectors. He has had success in developing and implementing new and existing safety programs and is often found in the field, tackling safety issues at the worksite. His most recent role was with an environmental services company, where he managed the safety program for 6 branches across BC.

Jeremy holds a diploma in Occupational Health and Safety from the University of New Brunswick and is a Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP).

James Rai Dip T. OHS

Safety Advisor - Team Lead

James Rai is a pragmatic Safety Advisor with a background in Kinesiology, Ergonomics and Rehabilitation. James achieved a Diploma in health & safety from BCIT to complement his skillset in 2015. He has implemented and worked with health and safety management systems in Facilities & Trades divisions, school boards, manufacturing plants, and most recently, property management companies.

James has been engaged with the Vancouver Airport Authority Property Management Group assisting with the implementation of a customized Safety Management System. This project required that James worked with the Senior Directors and management team to:

  • Provide immediate safety support for all stakeholders
  • Establish a Corporate Risk Registry
  • Develop a corporate safety manual
  • Develop a Tenant and Facilities safety manual
  • Develop guidelines for a Contractor Safety Management Program

What organizations need to do, in terms of health and safety, and what they’re capable of doing at this moment in time, are sometimes two different things. James carries on the philosophy of Pacific Safety of finding what works best for the individuals by thinking of real-world application of ideas.

Sarah Slater B Sc

Quality Management Systems Co-ordinator

Sarah joined our team in April 2017 as a Safety Advisor. She has a Bachelors Degree in Applied Environmental Science from Strathclyde University in Scotland and NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety. Sarah most recently worked as a Training Superintendent and Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) Advisor for a waste management and recycling company that operated 6 facilities in British Columbia. She also comes to us with seven years experience in the Aluminum industry as a Health, Safety, Environment and Quality Specialist, specializing in Training & Development and Safety & Environmental Management Systems.

Sarah is experienced with the following project activities:

  • Training Management Program development and implementation
  • Management Systems development and implementation
  • Incident Investigation & Corrective Action Management
  • Auditing Management Systems in preparation for Certificate of Recognition.

Allison Buchhorn MSc OEH, BSc

Occupational Hygiene Advisor

Allison Buchhorn is an Occupational Hygiene Advisor with Pacific Safety. Allison achieved her Bachelor of Science in Pharmacology and Biotechnology from McGill University.  She returned to British Columbia and completed a Master of Science in Occupational and Environmental Hygiene at the University of British Columbia.

Allison’s passion for the well-being of others has led her to pursue opportunities in heavy industry where preventing workplace injuries and illnesses was her main priority. In addition, Allison’s time spent working in the Compensation Claim’s department of WorkSafeBC put into perspective the necessity of keeping workers healthy and safe, and emphasized the importance of preventing all occupational illnesses, injuries and disease. These experiences motivated her to complete a Master of Science in Occupational Hygiene where she gained experience in exposure monitoring for a wide variety of different workplace hazards, including asbestos, lead, and silica among others. Additionally, Allison has conducted workplace hazard assessments for common biological, chemical, and physical hazards, as well as indoor air quality and ergonomic concerns.

Allison is our resident hygienist helping clients with the development of exposure control plans, safe work procedures, air quality assessments, asbestos management, confined space assessments and other hygiene specific processes.

Rachael McMahon

Safety Advisor

Rachael McMahon has a Bachelors Degree, majoring in Mathematics, from Aberystwyth University in Wales. She is a certified safety officer and brings a range of OH&S experience in residential, commercial, and industrial construction, and is working on her NEBOSH certificate and Diploma.

Chris Jaillet

Safety Advisor

Chris comes to Pacific Safety after a long career in the oil and gas industry where he started as a ‘roughneck’ on the oil rigs to establishing and running a self-owned safety consulting company serving the oil and gas industry. Chris brings with him a broad spectrum of knowledge from years of experience in commercial and industrial construction as well as an extensive military background. After achieving an OH&S certification through the University of New Brunswick Chris has spent the last 3 years working managing safety for a large crane company in Alberta's Oil Sands. Chris currently supports our Contractor Safety Advising team.

Mauricio Severino CHE

Safety Advisor

Mauricio is enthusiastic about safety and continuous improvement, having worked in manufacturing and Oil & Gas companies for over ten years. He has a Bachelor Degree in Chemical Engineering from Universidade Federal Fluminense in Brazil and has vast experience in implementing, maintaining and continuously improving Safety, Quality, Health and Environmental management systems. Training and working with people is his passion and he believes that delivering a clear and accurate message regarding safe and efficient practices through campaigns is paramount for creating a strong safety culture. Also, he has worked as Senior Quality Engineer, responsible for delivering training in Continuous Improvement Techniques (Lean Enterprise) to employees from support and manufacturing areas, aimed at reducing wastes and risks in order to seek excellence.

Dakota Henderson

Safety Advisor

Dakota Henderson is a Safety Advisor with the YVR Contractor Safety Department. Dakota has a Red Seal Certification in Carpentry from the British Columbia Institute of Technology and he has most recently achieved his NCSO certification and renewed his Internal COR Auditor designation from the British Columbia Construction Safety Alliance. Currently enrolled at the University of Fredericton, he is pursuing his CRSP and MBA in Safety.

Dakota has over twenty-five years of field and management experience in construction, education, manufacturing, and forestry. He is well versed with the workplace technologies, systems and processes in these industries, as well as the health and safety issues related to these environments.  Dakota provides a high level of familiarity with construction-safety.

Adrian Mac Donnell

Safety Advisor

Adrian Mac Donnell is a Safety Advisor in the YVR Contractor Safety. Adrian achieved his bachelor degree, in Environmental Health and Safety Systems from the National University of Galway, Ireland. He moved to British Columbia in 2016 and has worked in both the medical and construction field.

Adrian is extremely passionate about safety and enjoys the diversity this industry provides. He has experience in the medical field including CE approval on machines, risk assessments and air and water sampling. He was also part of the team that implemented pictogram risk assessments throughout the workplace which simplified work tasks and provided a key understanding of the task in hand. He has conducted toolbox talks, evacuation procedures, site inspections and believes communication, passion and a willingness to learn is key to a strong safety culture.

Adelina Ortega

Safety Administrator

Adelina joined Pacific Safety in January of 2018. She has a bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety and Environmental Hygiene from the Costa Rica Institute of Technology (ITCR). Most recently her work was as a Health & Safety Advisor contracted out to Amazon Support Services in Costa Rica. She was part of a team that designed, coordinated and developed their Safety Management System, Emergency Response Program and Ergonomics Program. Her attention to detail and commitment to the identification, evaluation and design of solutions for work related health and safety issues has made her a natural fit for the standards of excellence that Pacific Safety Consulting has become known for.

Barbara McNab

Office Administrator

Barbara is an administrative professional with over 15 years of practical experience. Barbara spent 5 years in the not for profit sector managing office operations and special projects. Her attention to detail combined with her exceptional customer service keep us on track to deliver a high quality of service.
