With over 25 years’ experience as a safety professional and a real passion for working with people, Fernando founded Pacific Safety in 2008. His vision was to attract like-minded, high performing safety professionals who shared his passion and want to help reducing risk, eliminating harm, and increasing wellness in the workplace.

Fernando has been a long standing, active member of the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering and is a Certified Health and Safety Consultant since 2009. His professional career has been deeply rooted in British Columbia. He spent 15 years in the classroom teaching Occupational First Aid, Instructor Development Programs and WorkSafeBC Education Partner courses. He was the Director of Training with the Care Institute of Safety and Health Inc., and EMS Plus Safety Services Inc.  His experience as a professional adult facilitator was the foundation for his excellence in communication approach to advising today.

Scott Lescak CRSP

Senior Advisor, Consulting Services Manager 

Scott is a health, safety, and environmental professional, and senior advisor with Pacific Safety.  Scott has over 15 years of working experience in health and safety. He has implemented and worked with quality, environmental, and H&S management systems in the manufacturing, waste management, mining, construction, and aviation industries in the UK, U.S and Canada.  His understanding of management systems has allowed him to gain a solid insight into the importance of performance management from floor to board levels.

He achieved a NEBOSH certificate in Health and Safety in Scotland and a certificate of Environmental Practice in Canada.

Based on his experience and his education, Scott has developed a strong expertise in:

  • HSE Management Systems
  • Auditing
  • Performance Management

His recent work experience includes work for:

Alastair Wright M Sc

Safety Advisor

Alastair is a safety advisor with over 10 years experience managing health and safety. He has been involved with HSE program development as well as implementation.

With a master’s degree in disaster management from the UK, Alastair has a diverse background of international experience including Oil and Gas, Construction, Maintenance, Live Plant Industrial, and Military. His recent work experience includes work for:

  • YVR Vancouver Airport (Safety advisor)
  • Target Safety contracted to Cenovus Energy (Safety advisor)
  • Ignite Group Ltd (UK) (Safety advisor)

His professional experience and education allowed Alastair to gain extensive expertise in:

  • Oil and gas health and safety management systems
  • Hazardous material assessment
  • Confined space

Alastair is also an Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) specialist.

Gary Bains B Sc

Safety Advisor

Gary graduated with distinction from the Occupational Health and Safety Diploma Program at BCIT. He has a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of British Columbia. Gary has worked in variety of industry sectors including construction, manufacturing, public sector, and the service sector. His combination of education and work experience has provided him with the tools necessary to solve problems in an innovative and efficient way.

Gary has been assisting the Vancouver International Airport Authority manage its contractor safety program. This project requires that Gary represent the owners’ interest within the Capital Construction Safety Management program.

His main areas of responsibility include:

  • Acting as the owners’ safety representative at project meetings
  • Performing contractor pre-qualification and safety program reviews
  • Reviewing site specific safety programs
  • Auditing contractor site safety performance for adherence to owner Capital Construction Safety and Security Manual (CSSM)
  • Completing permits
  • Building relationships with multiple airport stakeholders

Gary’s other project activities and recent experience includes:

  • Conducting a safety program audit of a warehouse facility
  • Developing and implementing a site-specific audit tool using the Workers Compensation Act, Occupational Health & Safety Regulation, and good industry practices as guidelines
  • Conducting a walkthrough survey of a welding shop to determine if workers were overexposed to physical occupational hygiene hazards such as noise, vibration, and temperature extremes
  • Carrying out Respirator Fit Testing for workers at the District of Saanich

Marybeth MacDonald M Sc

Occupational & Environmental Hygienist

Marybeth MacDonald is our resident Occupational and Environmental Hygienist. Marybeth achieved her Bachelor of Science, with an honours in Chemistry from her home town Cape Breton University. She moved to British Columbia in 2013 and completed a Master of Science, Occupational and Environmental Hygiene at the University of British Columbia.

Marybeth spent the last two years working as a graduate student on various OHS projects. This experience exposed her to the construction, mining, transportation and municipal industries. These work experiences provided opportunities to work with the following clients:

  • Lead exposure from welding assessment for Orca Steel
  • Occupational silica sampling for the BCCSA silica exposure project
  • Hazard assessment for the Vancouver south transfer station
  • Silica and noise exposure monitoring for the Ministry of Mines
  • Carbon monoxide monitoring for the Vancouver Airport Authority
  • Construction worker ergonomic assessment for demolition contractor

Jay Weisbrod CSO

Safety Advisor

Jay brings a wealth of Construction Safety field experience to the team.  For the last two years Jay has worked in the field as a safety officer for Vanderlande Industries at the Vancouver International Airport. In this role Jay was responsible for sub-trade safety management on the multi-million dollar Baggage Backbone Enhancement Project. Combining his construction safety experience with his airport baggage hall construction experience will be a valuable asset to our team. In his new role Jay will be working with the Construction Contractor Management team at YVR.

Safety Advisor

James Rai is a pragmatic Safety Advisor with a background in Kinesiology, Ergonomics and Rehabilitation. James achieved a Diploma in health & safety from BCIT to complement his skillset in 2015. He has implemented and worked with health and safety management systems in Facilities & Trades divisions, school boards, manufacturing plants, and most recently, property management companies.

James has been engaged with the Vancouver Airport Authority Property Management Group assisting with the implementation of a customized Safety Management System. This project required that James worked with the Senior Directors and management team to:

  • Provide immediate safety support for all stakeholders
  • Establish a Corporate Risk Registry
  • Develop a corporate safety manual
  • Develop a Tenant and Facilities safety manual
  • Develop guidelines for a Contractor Safety Management Program

What organizations need to do, in terms of health and safety, and what they’re capable of doing at this moment in time, are sometimes two different things. James carries on the philosophy of Pacific Safety of finding what works best for the individuals by thinking of real-world application of ideas.

Sarah Slater B Sc

Safety Advisor

Sarah joined our team in April 2017 as a Safety Advisor. She has a Bachelors Degree in Applied Environmental Science from Strathclyde University in Scotland and NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety. Sarah most recently worked as a Training Superintendent and Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) Advisor for a waste management and recycling company that operated 6 facilities in British Columbia. She also comes to us with seven years experience in the Aluminum industry as a Health, Safety, Environment and Quality Specialist, specializing in Training & Development and Safety & Environmental Management Systems.

Sarah is experienced with the following project activities:

  • Training Management Program development and implementation
  • Management Systems development and implementation
  • Incident Investigation & Corrective Action Management
  • Auditing Management Systems in preparation for Certificate of Recognition.
